I am envisioning a system that facilitates a local community exchange. People could visit a website and set up a local group of friends that they want to exchange services with. An example might be "Sellwood Babysitting", or "Portland Car Maintenance". The group can be invite only (as in the babysitting example) or open to anyone. Each group ( Read more... )

It is legal to issue your own money as a community. A lot of communities tha do this use "hours" - like one hour of work is the denomination.

Is anyone in Portland using "hours"? The only thing I found was Ithaca Hours. Interestingly they were started to represent 1 hour of work but now are pegged to be equal to $10. So 1 hour of dentistry might cost 4 or 5 Ithaca hours.
