This was supposed to be another LJ-less day, until I saw this:

For the past 16 years, sisters Gladys and Jamie Scott have been serving life sentences for an armed robbery during which $11 was stolen and no one was seriously injured.

Armed robbery is armed robbery. What you walked away with, be it $10000, $11, or nothing, is immaterial. You still held a gun to someone's head.

Yes, the sentence is a bit harsh, and yes, the kidney-for-freedom thing is unorthodox.

My point is that I don't know why the $11 was even mentioned at all.

Because it offers a nice contrast with both the sentence and the arrangement: these women were considered too dangerous to live among the rest of society, until one of them cost 200k/year to that same society. Now, they are not that dangerous...
