Variety is the Spice of Life: a Crossposting Rant

May 20, 2010 18:45

Before I begin, I should say that this could apply to fandom or original slash, but it happened to be an original fic that inspired my irritation.  If it's inappropriate for this community I do apologize.

Communities are a great place to promote one's original slash writing, and there many of them out there for slash writers and readers, some have ( Read more... )

I think I know which fic it was~!

... And I must say, the excessive advertising made me lose all desire to read it. Hah!

I suppose it really wouldn't be hard to figure out... just take a gander at my friend's page and scroll down until it feels like you're on a visual treadmill.

Ugh, I hate this too!! Especially when I believe most original slashers on LJ at least have either ah_gayfiction or the_originals on their F-lists. Overexposure like that really puts me off reading the fic.

and then there was the tacky self-promotion on the slash pile... And um, I decided to dig through their profile because I had a mini-crisis about whether they might be a member of this community and figure out I'd dumped on them. And then I wondered if they'd done even more cross posting. I think they did it 7 times... ye gods.

And it's not the only one! There's also this other story that shows up at least 3 times on my flist every single time a new chapter is released. And yes, they also do the slash_pile pimping. x__x

I feel it would make more sense to post in one comm in the morning, one in the afternoon, one later in the evening. That would be more effective and much less annoying I think.

I probably would have whatever-ed it, but for the fact that it's basically an advertisement for something she/he was lucky enough to get published. Good for them and all that, but I'm probably not going to be giving them any money.

I wonder if you're talking about the same person I'm *annoyed* with XP I see this person on places other than lj comms (they of course post on lj excessively; plus slash pile, plus comms that haven't updated in years, plus- yeah). Forums, they're there. Anything that deals with slash (like a rec site other than lj). They're there. Just EVERYWHERE. Gah. And I never see them rec'ing other peoples' work. If there's a story you're looking for, they're self-pimping their own as if they never do it. They can at least offer up other people's fics as well instead of their own all the time when someones looking for a fic -.-

I think I know which one you're talking about too. It really got on my nerves as well! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who got really pissed off. Overexposure really makes me NOT want to read that fic.

oddly enough, I was only somewhat annoyed when I started to write the above post. It was only when I started to lay out my reasoning that I began to make myself angrier. Strange, isn't it? Anyway, I'm glad I'm not alone in finding it annoying either.

I understand annoyance, but I also understand why people do it, even though like you had pointed out, xposting it in a time line of few days would give the story better exposure and caused less annoyance - something to remember.

Yeah, I understand why people do it.... the way this particular person did it was just so heavy handed that it defeated their original purpose, at least for me.

Not just for you.
Yeah, she's over doing it five (seven) times without a pause in between is too much, but since that writer is damaging herself with xposting - it just makes me turn on my ignore mode.
