That said, I prefer not to think of mom when involved in fandom -- something about it is just creepy.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm in the process of finishing a book series my mom recommended to me, one of the few I've read that seems to have any kind of fandom. But I'm not sure I'll ever check it out, because the idea of stumbling upon some fic my mom wrote just weirds me out really bad. It has already been scary enough when she was asking me if I had noticed the canon slash(although she didn't use that term) in the second book...

The Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett. They're historical fiction, mostly set in 1500s Scotland. They've been really awesome so far. It's just weird to have your own mother asking you if you "picked up on what was really going on" at particular parts.

Ever since I saw Star Trek XI, I've been taken over by the Shiny New Fandom Syndrome (TM)!

Oh man, me too. It's frightening how much that movie has eaten my brain. I may have spent the last week working my way through the kink meme. And the Journey to Drabble thing. And as many reviews/meta as I can find.
