A quart is 4 cups or 1/4 of a gallon. ;-) It is very slightly more than a liter.

1 quart = .95 liters
1 liter = 1.06 quarts

Most juice pitchers & measuring cups (of that size) here have both quarts & liters, so I knew they were close. I did have to Google the exact conversion.
