I've read in places that peat moss should not be used, because it is not "sustainably harvested." But I' ve never read anywhere what purpose it serves if you leave it in the bog. Anyone know?
Most (though not all) peat harvesting involves what could be described as open-cast mining for peat - scooping it out in huge trenches, completely removing the ecosystem that goes with it and leaving a bare surface. This can regenerate, but not into peatland, because peat takes thousands of years to form.
Its purpose is to be a peat bog, supporting the unique plants, insects and birds of peatland, which don't occur anywhere else.
There is some peat which is filtered from streams running through bogland rather than just scooped out wholesale, which is considered more sustainable.
