Running a Worldcon filk track

Aug 31, 2014 23:42

This is a set of notes in no particular order which were collated by me (Lissa Allcock, should anyone be stumbling on this and not know) as a result of working on Loncon3's filk track in 2014.

I'm not kidding about the 'no particular order' bit - this is just as the memories struck me.

Real food for tech - this is always a problem at filkcons, too. I did get drinks for the crew on the Thursday but confess I then didn't remember to check back with them again on other days (running after a small child may have had something to do with this). I'm not sure what the solution for this is - have a rota of tech support people (as in "supporting the tech crew")? Ideally not the concom, as they will invariably have a million other things to be chasing after at the same time (again, at Semibreve, I did chase down Rick with platefuls of food every now and then, but I'm sure there were plenty of other times where it was needed and I didn't).

Also (she says, coming out of that semi-random stream of consciousness) - I should say this again: it was an excellent filk track! Good work, and thank you! :)

I must say that this was something I (hopefully) learned while working this years filk programme, not something I actually achieved. But I have an upcoming opportunity to put it into practice...

On the subject of busking, Bucconneer did a similar thing with their Passing Fancies. The idea was a bit like the bandstand in the fan village, except more programmed; a bunch of people were tapped to do half hour performances of whatever they felt like, entertaining the food court. I sang Dowland, for instance, which got odd looks from the fans expecting filk. The problem was that basically it was a horrible area to sing in (you got nothing back), and there were objections (from nearish dealers who I still can't believe could hear a thing) when a small amount of amplification was supplied. Nice idea, though.

Some good points here, to which I make an erratic response ( ... )
