Trashy Trash

As part of my first book order for the library, I bought a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey. I try not to judge my patrons by what they borrow, but I am going to be inwardly side-eyeing the fuck out of anyone who borrows it.

People on twitter will not shut up about this book at all!

I for one am beyond terrified to read it. Apparently the sporking value is really damn high though.

I skimmed the first few pages after I got it processed, and I immediately hated the narrator for being annoying. I don't get it.

Ugh. Fanfic (good and bad) has its uses, but this whole phenomenon just disturbs me on so many levels. Also, aren't the women who would want to borrow this supposed to be the same women who are so embarrassed by "naughty" sex that they hide it on their ereaders? Hope most of your patrons borrow it ironically :D

Yes! That's what I don't understand. My hometown library actually chose not to purchase a copy because they decided it was erotica and therefore not appropriate for their collection. I decided to purchase it because I had people request it before it was even available in print, and we're a small enough library that if I know something will circulate, I'd rather have it to help our numbers....but it's clearly all "naughty" sex, so I don't understand how it went from "hide it on your e-reader" to "omg, you have to read this!" I thought Americans were still more repressed than that. :P

The thing that makes me saddest is one of my nicest patrons, a man in his late 50s, asked me to put it on hold for him. In my head I was screaming "nooooooo! How did you even hear about this?" So I'm really hoping for irony there.

Not only is the writing godawful, from what I've seen the relationship is as problematic as Twilight. Ugh.

Considering it started as Twilight fanfic and she just changed the names to get it published, it is definitely as problematic as the relationship in Twilight.
