Dune is of the awesome. My final term paper was an analysis of Paul Atreides as a messianic figure. *geek* The books go steadily downhill, but the films get steadily better. Dune stands alone well, but Dune Messiah and Children of Dune are still well worth the read. As far as the movies go, Lynch's Dune of the 70s and Sci-Fi Channel's Dune miniseries go through various stages of iffyness that culminate in the followup SF Channel Children of Dune miniseries, which is actually quite accurate to the image and feel of the books, IMO.
Okay, shpeil done. The Dune universe is one of my favorites, so forgive my bookstore commando moment. ^_^.
Strangely, even being a non-gamer, I completely understand the completist accomplishment thing. But I am also deeply in touch with my inner geek, so maybe not all that strange.
