supernatural women

So, I'm finally done with Season 4 of Supernatural (actually typing this while I watch "Lucifer Rising" - talk about spoilery title!) But there is something about the female characters these past two seasons that has really bothered me (and probably the reason it took me so long to finish season 4):

if you're somehow further behind than me on SPN, then spoilers! )

I've struggled with the same thing with that show.. it's kind of what keeps it from being a favourite, I think, because on paper, it should be about the best thing since sliced bread for me. It's the combination of a lack of a female protagonist, combined with the often shoddy portrayal of women in supporting and guest roles. While there are exceptions, as you noted, those are few and far between, and not enough to necessarily erase all of the evil demon/thieves/whatever, eye candy, and plain ol' victims. (And for that matter, I think the same thing could be said for minorities on the show. In terms of showing characters in a positive light, Supernatural is kind of a white males club.) And sadly, this hasn't improved at all so far in season five ( ... )

I wonder how many female writers they have on the show? I know fan reaction was pretty negative when Ruby first appeared (since I had people on my flist who were watching the show and got the vibe even in non-spoilery posts) but part of me wonders if they are just really uncomfortable writing female characters and panic when anyone criticizes them (unlike other shows where they just keep writing them anyway, no matter how poorly they are done *coughlostcough ( ... )
