So, it's been a few weeks now and I've had time to ruminate a bit more on the latest Star Wars movie. If you didn't see my previous thread that linked to my twitter post, I can boil most of my feelings toward this movie as this:

The fan service overwhelmed the story. I wanted Rey and Finn and Poe and Rose and Kylo Ren - their stories, their finales. - Man oh man. I agree wholeheartedly! Though, in spite of myself, I did enjoy the movie overall, I wish TROS let their stories conclude, not those of the heroes of yesteryear.

Yeah. I mean, I was sad that Carrie Fisher died suddenly but I wish they hadn't clearly bent over backwards to rework the story around her death. I almost feel like it would have been better, smarter even, to have Leia die off screen and start the movie with her funeral. Imagine the loss to the Resistance, the story could have been about moving on when your heroes have passed away.

Exactly. Too many fragile fans who feel as though a criticism of 40 year franchise is somehow a personal attack on them.

I missed the 2nd film in the third trilogy, but if I'd seen it, I'd probably have been more disappointed. And the Emperor was a bit of a bore.

I think it says a lot that you didn't see it and you were able to watch this one. I mean, imagine watching RotJ without seeing ESB. You would feel a bit confused.

Yes, there were lots of great things in the film. I liked how they linked to the original film.

I liked the relaxed way that Luke, Leia and Han were shown.

But thought the Emperor was a real stretch ... although I suppose it gave the same link back to Vader turning against him, so Kylo Ren had that similar storyline.

However, overall I loved it

Yeah, my next post might be about the Emperor plot line which I felt undermined a lot of Rey and Kylo's stories.
