ADIML - January 31

Feb 01, 2019 22:35

You can all blame twissie for this! She did ADIML post last week and encouraged me to give it a try. If you all fall asleep while reading, I'm sorry!

This is my first time doing something like this so, here we go!

I could never get the hang of Thursdays )

Haha, I love Sylvia's comment about reading levels and women's clothing sizes! I have a beef with reading levels too, I used to tutor kids in reading and we were supposed to get books with the "right" reading level for them, and I just thought it was so stupid. Just let the kids read whatever they want... if they learn to like reading, they'll start reading more challenging books of their own accord.

I was helping a patron the other day that wanted to see the reading level for a book she had in her hands and I grumbled about it but she was insisted that our catalog shows them (which is does for whatever the 3 top indexes are now). Anyway, I brought it up and it said "2.4" and she goes "Okay, second grade, 4 months in" and I wanted to scream "WTF HOW?!? HOW CAN IT KNOW THAT?!"

9 times out of 10 I end up talking to them and trying to find what kind of stories the kid enjoys reading and use that as a gauge for "level". Because I agree with you, kids need to read what they want and eventually they will branch out.

Ugh, that's so annoying! How can every second grader be exactly at the same place 4 months in? Let them be individuals! I'm glad you help them find something the kid enjoys.

I have been using an electric teapot for year and think they are the best. I bought one for my dad, when he was still with us, because we were afraid he would forget he turned the stove on and start a fire. He also loved it. When he passed my brother was very happy to "inherit" it.

They are great aren't they?

They really are! My Mom turned me on them, she had one first. They are just so handy for so many things - tea, instant oatmeal, melting a bullion cube or something like that. 10/10 would recommend!

I'm glad you discovered the Orville!
I'm a big fan of that one.

This was a fun read. Hooray for electric kettles!

I'm just so angry at whoever made the ads! I remember the commercials made it looks like "Family Guy In Space!" and I was like "eh, I don't need that" so I ignored it completely. If someone had said "It's like Star Trek but just with a smidge more obvious humor" I would have watched from day one!
