We went in Mar of this year, for our second time. First time we did the resort thing, this time we rented cars and got AirBnBs. We did 2 days in Arenal - long drive, but the roads had just been redone, so while it was twisty (mountain roads), the pavement was pretty smooth (except for a few exciting potholes lol). Then 5 days at the beach. The beach roads were way easier to navigate, but in town was a little confusing to find things. Just took patience and paying attention.
We always felt safe (traveling with 3 kids and 3 seniors, in addition to 4 adults), we could drink the water, it was great weather. I'd buy land down there in a heartbeat if I was rich.
