I think those things are supposed to be a cross guard, to protect the hand. Hands come off a lot in light saber fights...

Yes but shouldn't the cross guards not have the ability to harm the holder on their own? What if he slips? He could give his thumbs a nasty burn!

My boyfriend and I had to rewatch that trailer because we couldn't believe how impractical that lightsaber was. The robot stole my heart though!
