Oliver was busy doing work, trying to catch up, or even get ahead. There was music playing in the background, the latest CD from a show he had seen, weeks ago, when there was an almost inaudible knock at his door. He frowned, wondering who would visit him, so late at night. He thought about ignoring it, but the person was quite persistent. He finally got up and went to answer, when even Schrodinger started complaining.
He was quite surprised, when he found Jean Tremblay, on the other side.
“You look like shit.” Was the first thing he managed to say. He didn’t mean it as an insult. Jean really looked bad. He had deep pockets under his eyes, his hair was a mess, he had a five o’clock shadow, his clothes were crinkled, and he looked as though he hadn’t slept in weeks.
“J’vais prendre ça comme un compliment… j’peux tu rentrer? Ça fait des heures que chuis sur la route.”/ “I’ll take that as a compliment… can I come in? I’ve been on the road for hours.”
“Bien sûr…”/ “Of course…” Oliver stepped aside and let him through. Jean almost tripped over the rug and Oliver had to help him to the living room. Something was definitively wrong and it worried him. He hadn’t seen him this bad in ages.
“’S’cuse, j’ai mal à la tête…”/ “Sorry, I have a headache…” He murmured, once he was on the couch and then it clicked for Oliver. It made perfect sense. With what was currently going on in the province, it was only normal that Jean’s migraines would return, as strong as they had been, in the past.
Oliver remembered all the times Jean had come to find him, whether they were together or not, to seek solace and refuge from everything. It had started when they were married, what felt like a lifetime ago, when one night, Jean had been suffering from a terrible migraine.
He had tried everything short of bashing his head against the wall, to make it go away, but nothing worked. Eventually, he simply took to the couch and lay there, waiting for the storm to pass.
Oliver had found him there and had felt bad for him. On a spur of the moment, and as an act of compassion, he had sat next to him, put Jean’s head on his lap, and had passed his fingers through his hair, massaging his scalp.
It didn’t make the migraine go away, and the problems were still there, in the morning, but for the first time that week, Jean had been able to sleep. From that point on, whenever Jean suffered through a particularly bad headache that no amount of Tylenol, or stronger medication could cure, he would try to fight it off himself, but ultimately, regardless of their current status, he somehow managed to find himself at Oliver’s.
“Inquiète toi pas pour ça, allez, couche toi, ça va te faire du bien.”/ “Don’t worry about it, go on, lie down, you’ll feel better.” Oliver helped Jean get into a comfortable position and it didn’t take long for him to put his head on Oliver’s lap, and for Oliver to start running his fingers through his hair. Jean let out a deep sigh and closed his eyes.
Oliver observed him. He looked at the tight lines around his face and his clenched jaw. With every stroke, Jean finally started to relax. Despite everything that could happen, he knew he would do this for Jean, no matter what.
“Merci…”/ “Thanks…” Oliver heard him mumble, sometime later.
“Don’t worry about it, just relax.”
He kept with his ministrations, long after Jean had fallen asleep, on him, and he hoped, for both their sakes, that this would pass and that everything would fall into place.
But if it didn’t, he’d still be here.
