“Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy.” Ezekial 16:49.

Glenn Beck Urges Listeners to Leave Churches That Preach Social Justice:
"On his daily radio and television shows last week, Fox News personality Glenn Beck set out to convince his audience that 'social justice,' the term many Christian churches use to describe their efforts to address poverty and human rights, is a "code word" for communism and Nazism."

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." Proverbs 31:8-9

I am deathly tired of letting the far right determine what makes a Christian. I am tired of hearing that my commitment to civil rights, gay marriage, and reproductive freedoms makes me less of a believer. I am tired of being told that compassion and support for the poor, and a desire to see a world with universal health care and social safety nets, is the mark of a communist-socialist-nazi-traitor. I am done hearing these things. This faith is not only about praying, reading the Bible, going to church, being polite, forgiving your family members. It is about trying to be a force for good.

I don't believe that you have to be Christian to be a good person. And being a Christian isn't some automatic ticket to being a decent human being. Two of the people I love and respect most in this world are atheists, while all I have to do is turn on the tv to see plenty of examples of shitty, selfish individuals who go on and on about their Christian beliefs. Being a good person is about what you do, how you treat others. This Glenn Beck thing is just so egregious- I can't believe anyone would allow themselves to be so blinded, so manipulated, into thinking that selfishness and loathing for the poor has anything to do with Christian doctrine.

"If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:17-18

The heart of Christian faith is social justice. Without it, our prayers are empty, our kind words meaningless.
