did you know Bach had a father?

Tom Purdom reminded me of this awesome, awesome bit from Patrick O'Brian the other day, from the Aubrey-Maturin series. In this section, Jack Aubrey is speaking to Stephen Maturin about some new music he's acquired.

I squeal every time I read it. Mentally, I mean.

I think I squealed out loud the first time, when it came up unexpectedly.

I really need to take another stab at those books sometime. I think I might love the characters and the language enough to overcome my deep aversion to sea-stories.

Because damn.

They're sea stories but...not. DEFINITELY worth it. I am reading the series slowly--I have very few left, and when those are done, I might go back and read them all again.

Huh. I too have been avoiding them because I dislike sea stories. However, I find the language above quite amusing. Perhaps I shall give one a try.

Have some CANDY. It's best to start with the first one, MASTER AND COMMANDER.

I love that bit, and even more is the bit when Stephen wakens, and Jack is playing brilliantly yet sadly--and Stephen realizes that Jack is far from the clown he'd assumed, that he'd been holding himself back.

Yes. Those characters just grow deeper and deeper.

Oh, thank you. I'm reading Desolation Island right now. I'm making my way through the books very slowly, but with great enjoyment.

I am trying to make them last as long as possible. I only have 3 left! Plus the unfinished "21."

I love those books. Need to go back and finish reading the series. Though it's tempting to go back and start at the first one, so I remember what was going on.

If you start over, they'll last longer.

I've started reading the series several times, and have always made myself stop before I get all the way through -- I go a few volumes further each time, but I dread the day I finally make it to the end of the last book, and realize I'll never again be able to read one for the first time.
