Family dinner

Nov 28, 2006 20:06

Babs would've fed Mary herself, but the youngest Grayson is (unsurprisingly) insistent that she be allowed to feed herself. So instead of being cuddled in her mother's arms for dinner, Mary is very proudly sitting in her high chair and delicately picking up English peas, popping them one by one into her mouth. Every once in a while she breaks ( Read more... )

He's paused his own dinner in favor of watching his daughter eat, his head resting on one fist as he does so. His smile as he observes Mary's antics is present and genuine, though tainted by his latent moodiness.

I say the longer we stay away from brussels sprouts, the better.

"I don't like the smell," she grins back at him. "I was thinking of letting her have a banana later."

"Nanananana," Mary burbles contentedly.

I guess that means I'm on bathtime duty, he counters with a look towards Barbara.

"We could share," she suggests. "It does sometimes take two of us to bathe her. Besides, we haven't had nearly enough family time together."

He could happily put this off again, and just spend more time with his wife, but putting it off doesn't make it go away.

It doesn't change what happened, and the fact that he'll have to deal with it.

He broke Bruce's back. And the worst part about it was that he wanted to do it. Never mind that his rage was incited by Psimon. The fact that he did it, and that he knew just how to cripple him was enough.

He has the feeling that he's got a hell of a lot of apologizing to do in the following days and weeks.

I screwed up, Babs.

She tilts her head to kiss his cheek. "I'm still here."

Rhymes with "I'm listening" and "I love you" and "We'll get through this, whatever it is."

And he's still holding her. Maybe not entirely unlike how a drowning man clings to driftwood.

He's not sure if he can get through this.

He didn't think he could ever reach the low he was at three years ago. It's apparent in his face that he's feeling pretty damned close to it, however.

I didn't think I could do something like that... not to him.

She'd put together a lot of the pieces earlier, from the com traffic and the medical records Mid-Nite had needed. But processing that data can't compare to hearing her husband sound so broken now.

She can't decide what to say at first. It's okay would trivialize his feelings. Bruce is better now is true, but it doesn't address the real problem her husband is wrestling with. You're one of the few people who could've done it is equally true, but even less relevant and more devastating.

"It's terrifying," she says instead, "learning we can do things we didn't think we wanted to."
