The only thing I didn't like was the end. Danny should have gone to Steve...or Steve should have just showed up with a six-pack of beer and slept in the chair (like Matt did for Danny). Even discounting the slash, it would have made more sense.
Well, other than the reverse situation. Matt was there for Danny when things went to hell with Rachel...and Rachel is there for him now. But still...
Also, I don't care what the CC claims. Danny turns to Steve to get his attention and says, "Honey."
And the first part of your post is pretty much the consensus with my flist; most can't stand Dane, but think he did really well in this ep.
Maybe it's because Dane can do smarmy, skeevy, obnoxiously irritating so easily.
I think it made sense for Danny to have gone to Rachel first since he would have known her longer than he's known Steve, and more importantly, for the benefit of Grace since she is also blood relative.
It's easy enough to imagine he went to Steve afterward for more comforting. I can see Steve setting up some lawn chairs on his private beach and sharing some beers with him in quiet contemplation of relatives across the waves. Allow the calm to overwhelm him before tucking him in for the night.
