Zelda was not entirely sure how it happened. For one, she and Link had been extremely careful (they were unmarrried) and for two, they had only been together once before he had gone off to the Lost Woods on another adventure. It really should not have happened but yet here it was the second month since they had shared a bed and she still did not have her cycle.
She decided to keep it secret a little longer but when two months turned into four and Link was due home any day now she really could not hide it any longer. She had taken to wearing loose gowns that hid her shape so that the court did not notice the gentle swell of her belly and the widening of her usually-narrow hips. When the messenger came in to tell her Link had arrived, she retired to her chambers, contemplating exactly how to tell him what had happened.
She was deliberating over the best way to bring it up when she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder, squeezing and rubbing lightly.
"Lost in thought, Princess?" Link asked, his voice low and comforting. She turned to look up at him, still seated, and nodded.
"You could say that. I would suggest you sit down," she said, motioning toward her bed. Link gave her a curious glance but sat, pulling off his gauntlets.
"I am with child," she said bluntly, standing up to reveal the changes in her body. Link's eyes widened in shock--he had been careful and it had only happened once, really, how could she be pregnant? He schooled his features into something more blank and flicked his eyes over her.
"I am sorry, Princess," he said, getting up to take her hand in his. "When I said I knew a way to prevent this I really thought it would work...I thought pulling out would help," he said, blushing a little. "All of the other times I have laid with a woman that method seemed to work."
Zelda blushed in return, eyes flashing with annoyance. "Clearly it did not work this time," she said, looking down at herself. "I cannot hide it any longer. I will be the laughing stock of the entire kingdom for this: unmarried Princess Zelda cannot control her passions." She sighed a little. "It is better than the current gossip, at least. Everyone seems to think I wish to be with a woman."
Link laughed at that, looping an arm around her waist. "I do not think they would say such things if they knew you in private, Princess. You seem to like me well enough, or did anyway," he said, kissing her gently on the cheek.
"It is a simple enough fix. Tell them that you and I were married months ago and you have just now pinned me down for a ceremony." Zelda contemplated that. It could work, even if it would come as a bit of a shock to the kingdom at large. Most of the court thought that she would remain unmarried until the end of her days. Oh, how wrong they had been.
"I do not want to marry just because you got me with child," she said, a little annoyed. "That is a stupid reason to marry, Link."
Link laughed and pulled her close. "If you honestly think I would only marry you because of that, then you doubt me completely. I would have married you years ago if you weren't so stubborn."
In hindsight, that probably was not the best thing to say.
