A quick squee moment.

Ten Best Gay Sci-fi/fantasy/comic characters.OMG I love this list. I love that it has Andrew and Ianto and Cluracan on it, I... cannot disagree with number one, considering all factors (outness of actors, hotness, USA perspective etc), and I am in FULL ON FLAILING SQUEE MODE over number two. Except not because I'm technically at work right now ( Read more... )

Um.
Um.
Where are the women?
Squee yes, but...there isn't a single woman on that list.
Apparently lesbians can't be superheroes, or if they can, it's not glamorous or important enough to mention.

No, hang on, of course I wouldn't argue such a thing - I just didn't read it properly, because I have just woken up. Thanks for pointing that out.

I wonder who would be on the equivalent women's list though? Fact is that lesbianism *isn't* seen as quite as glamorous...*thinky*.

's OK, a couple of people on the Whedonesque thread (where I found this) missed that too. Apparently, there's going to be a top ten lesbians one going up later. :)

Andrew and Ianto... *heart* And I really enjoyed reading the comments/debate about whether Joss has a 'problem' with overtly gay male lead characters (I'd say not, but that his networks definitely do). Thanks for pointing up the link!

In the whedonesque comments, Joss actually says something very interesting about the moment in The Girl In Question, where Andrew says 'people change' and then appears to go off with two gorgeous girls. I don't know about you, but I was expecting guys. Turns out, it was a mistake. The people at the door were supposed to be a mixture of girls and guys - meant to be about Andrew's new-found suavity and social eptness, not his gayness or otherwise - but Joss wasn't on set that day and so couldn't point out that it was wrong.

How interesting is that? Even more interesting than the fact that there are people on the thread who claim never to have read Andrew as gay. You don't get much more obvious on American TV unless you're Captain Jack...

Oh, I love this. I'm not sure whether to feel like an uber-geek because I'm in eight of these fandoms or be ashamed that I don't know who the other two are. (Okay. The reality TV guy I will probably know about soon - I mean to watch that show purely because it's presented by Stan Lee - but who is the Zorro guy?)

Yay, Midnighter. And Northstar! They shouldn't have left Iceman out though - there's been enough hints that he returns Northstar's crush!

Lesbians and bisexual women - Hmm. My brain is broken! I can only think of Willow. Some versions of Catwoman, I think. :S

Ooh - speaking of Hellblazer - which graphic novel would you recommend for a beginner? I'm in no way a beginner, I just want your opinion because I'm writing a few reviews for the Cherwell. I was thinking about Dangerous Habits.

I started with Dangerous Habits, actually - accidentally, but yes, I'd reccommend it. You get a pretty good intro to the character and the world... it's got plenty of everything, the magic, the theology, the random Irish mates. (Plus, that's the one with the full page giving the devil the finger moment, which pretty much sums up Constantine for me.)

In terms of lesbian and bisexual women in sci-fi... I believe Willow and Jadzia Dax are both on there. I'd also say Inara and possibly Tosh. I don't know the X-men verse well enough to come up with one from there. (I mean I've always assumed Mystique was bisexual but that might just be me.)

Me too. You've gotta love him.

How did I forget Tosh? I'd thought of Inara but it's a bit less defined - she does choose her clients, but we'd have to guess at her feelings for them. Hm.

(Thanks for providing the whedonesque link, didn't know it had an LJ feed!)
