Arthur hadn't noticed the Chinese man watching him. He had been too busy gathering a crew and making ready to sail post haste. And now he was walking through the streets of Tortuga - sauntering, morelike - following Peter through the seedier parts of town (which went right past the docks, funnily enough). He sensed a presence behind him, and reached out, taking hold of Peter's wrist and bringing him to a stop ( ... )

Yao smiled confidently. Arthur Kirkland had cheated the last time they had fought, but in a fair fight, Yao knew he could not lose. He reached for his sword, beneath a long, rather heavy looking, ornate piece of clothing-it resembled a cape but it had structured shoulders. All of his clothing was made from deep red and deep green fabric and looked to be expensive and tailored for him.

He pulled out an elegant katana and narrowed his brown eyes, shifting his weight to be prepared and defensive.

"Fight honorably this time?"

Arthur Kirkland had been green, eager and ready to prove himself as a swordsman and a pirate captain, when he had last fought the Chinese man. He had cheated in order to pull out a win, and to end the fight quickly and with little bloodshed. He had known that in a long and bloodying battle, he could have perhaps played with honour to the draw. But at the time, he hadn't understood that it was better to draw with honour than to win ignobly.

This time, he was more experienced - as a captain, a swordsman, and a gentleman - and he was self-assured that even if the match came to a draw, there was no way that he could lose.

As the man slid into a fighting stance, Arthur focused and centered his weight.

"Aye," he said. "But not if it be a kill yer looking for. I'll not be dying tonight, at yer hands or anyone else's." The last time they had fought, they hadn't agreed that it wouldn't be to the death. He wanted that assurance this time, before they began.

I dunno, is this cuter? And I thought he looked stealthy, like little Yao was hiding. opium_aru August 22 2009, 20:27:41 UTC
Wang Yao looked at Arthur levelly. Perhaps it was true that he was no master swordsman--why should he be?--but he had learned a thing or two since the last time he had faced Arthur. Also, the way he had one had been childish, not to mention dishonorable. Still, it would appear that something in his face had changed, and not just the disfigurement of his face.

He also noticed the child standing behind Arthur. His lips curled into a wry smile. If nothing else told the truth, those eyebrows would have. It had to be a brother or a son.

"Aye," he agreed, his accent seeming to fit strangely with the word. "What business have I with death? Who's the pup?"

It didn't escape Arthur's notice that the man seemed almost to be mimicking his accent, but because it did him no harm he left it be. He felt that something drew him to the Chinese man, inexplicably, and he knew suddenly that he had to press this man into service on his crew ( ... )

He gave another long, thoughtful look to his boots it seemed, considering it. Then he looked up into Arthur's green eyes with a roll of his shoulders that resembled a shrug. His eyes wandered to the blood and he frowned at it a bit, but then looked away from the wound again. He was shifting his feet and suddenly more nervous than he ever was in a fight. Perhaps because this was something it was possible to lose ( ... )
