Lisey's Story, a non-review

Nov 09, 2006 08:03

One thing about stories is, what one reader loves another hates, which makes me think no one is really qualified to judge somebody else's story, except to say I liked, I didn't like (We'll publish, we won't publish). Still, I always want to say something about the things I read, and so I'm going to do it like so. I'll post a list of things I ( Read more... )

I haven't even attempted to read any since before Halloween, but I do think it's pretty good thus far. Though I do agree about the made up language. lol That's a headache.

Oh, and I LIKED Johnny Marinville! The only writer character he's ever had in a novel (and there have been a LOT of them) that I did NOT care for in the least was Mike Noonan from Bag of Bones. I liked Bobbi Anderson and Jim Gardner from The Tommyknockers, Thad Beaumont and George Stark (yes, he was evil, but he was so damn smooth) from The Dark Half, Bill Denbrough from IT, Paul Sheldon from Misery, and even Jack Torrance from The Shining. I know I'm leaving some out, but those are the first to come to mind. And the only one that seemed to have no redeeming qualities at all (in my opinion) was Mike Noonan. lol Oh wait, I just remembered one. That writer guy from the last two books of the Dark Tower series. He sucked. ;)

Noonan I'm mixed on. I'd actually like to see him show up again, especially if he's with Ki-ki. I felt sorry for Jack more than anything else. Loved George - like you said, he's smoooooooooooooooooth. I didn't like Jim Gardner through most of Tommyknockers, but by the end I had a sort of grudging respect for him, I suppose.

As for Scott? I didn't get enough of a feel for him to really have an opinion... at least not yet. Maybe after a few re-reads.

"that writer guy" snicker... I wonder if that's how he sees himself. I didn't like his fictional self.

George was all right for a bad guy; I've yet to make it through Tommyknockers for a second go, in spite of a few attempts. I think I remember that Bobbi didn't stay herself long enough for me to form any kind of attachment to her.

I was wondering what to read next, and apparently it should be BOB, since I forget who Ki-ki is! One good thing about CRS is being able to reread and have a few surprises.

I liked Bill and Paul. Jim and Mike, so-so but not among my favorite characters. BUT at least they were all engaging, whether I liked them or not. Most of the time other writers' author-characters are very yawn (to me.) As in, I can't think of a single one at the moment, heehee.

And holy Toledo, the unpubbed ones I used to read sometimes for critique purposes. Scary.
