i was reading through the smoking gun archives when i cam upon this:
what atkins proponents don't want you to knowit says that when dr. robert atkins died, he had myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and hypertnesion. there is a reason why we are told to stay under a certain amount of cholesterol. but this is just unhealthy. it's bad ( Read more... )

The key to losing weight is very simple, but no one wants to hear it. Eat Less, Exercise more, Drink more water. I like Dr. Phils' weight loss solution because it helps you to figure out why you are sabatoging yourself, and gives you some actual, concrete things to do. I don't thinks it's a fad. lowering your carbs is a good thing, we eat way too much bread and stuff, but Atkins just seems waaay to extreme to me. i only have 2 -3 servings of carbs a day, which is a lot less than most people, but not extreme.

I'm always looking for more people to work out with, but no one ever actually takes me up on it...

Atkin's diet has been shown, by itself, to not raise your cholesterol. Furthermore, just because Atkins heart was found to solve some problems, doesn't automatically mean it was the result of his diet. He was old, and, I hear, pretty high stress.

Furthermore 2, it's not 'carbs' that are required for your brain to work. It's more complicated than that. Make a long story short, not eating carbs will deny your brain a sugar 'rush', but that's ok, because it also denies it the bottoming out that follows the rush. Your brain will still work. Trust me on this.

I'm not saying Atkins is perfect. I'm not even recommending Atkins. But the only thing worse than a 'fad diet', is people lashing out blindly against something just because they see it as a 'fad diet'.
