Hello and welcome to Operation 80! I'm Emily, one of your co-mods, and I'll be giving you a little tour of what this fic challenge is all about and how to go about signing up to participate.

The idea for a challenge to reboot the episodes of the original Star Trek had been kicking around in my head for a while, and with exhortation from our lovely co-mods leyenn and raindissolved, I started it up. It's called Operation 80 because there's an episode called "Operation: Annihilate!" and there are 80 episodes of TOS (why yes I enjoy plays on words...). If you join, you will be signing up to write a fic remixing or rebooting one episode of Star Trek TOS into the 'verse of Star Trek XI.

Here's how it'll work.

• December 10 : Signups begin. You may sign up for one episode at a time, so pick the one you want the most. There will only be one claimant allowed per episode to start out; after the first round ends you will be allowed to write for any episode you want.
• December 31 : Signups close. All three of us mods are participating in Yuletide, and we figured a lot of you might be doing that or another holiday fic exchange as well. So if you want to wait til after Yuletide to sign up, go ahead!
• January 1 : Start writing!
• February 1 : Posting opens. We're giving you guys a big margin in which to post, because we'd love to see every episode get written for. So if you finish your first choice in three weeks and want to sign up for another ep that hasn't gotten any love yet, you'll be able to do so starting the first of February.
• March 31 : Posting for round 1 closes. You may now write a fic rebooting any episode, even if someone else has already written for it.

And we do have a couple of (we hope) simple rules or guidelines for writing your reboot fics.

• The first rule is the most important : your fic must follow the general plot of the episode. It might sound obvious, but just for clarification, the central plot point or conflict of the episode should stay the same. IE : if the Enterprise encounters certain aliens in the episode, they should encounter the same aliens in your fic, etc. What they do when they meet them might be totally different than what the TOS crew did when they met them, though, and you should get as creative as you want with that.
• The word minimum is 1000, but you can feel free to write as long a fic as you want! Any genre is accepted-- make it funny, make it dark, make it porny-- whatever you want, so long as it follows the first rule.
• Your fic can include any ship or be from anyone's point of view you want. Want to write "City on the Edge of Forever" from Edith Keeler's POV? Awesome! Think "The Empath" is all about Kirk/McCoy? Take it and run with it. Just remember to stick to rule #1.
• You do not have to consider other TOS eps as canon in the writing of your fic. If you're rebooting an ep from S3, you don't need to worry about referencing stuff that happened in S1 and S2 if you don't want to. All you have to be concerned with is the episode you're writing.
• Again, maybe obvious, but you should be writing a new fic for this challenge-- no reposting something you've posted elsewhere in the past.
