I've always loved paned sleeves. It's hard to tell from just the small frame, but it looks like it's a separate red paned oversleeve on top of a black larger undersleeve. Do you have a link to the full image or the title/artist?

I pondered on that too. I think it's an example of the white paint fading, and that it's really intended to be the chemise seen through the paned sleeves. But it might as well be a transparent gauze or silk of some sort, and black sleeves underneath, I can't tell for sure.

The artist is Lucas Cranach the Elder, the motif is Salome, and it's in Göteborgs Konstmuseum, Sweden.
