I think so too. Both for Degas and his model...

There is some truth to what the reviewer wrote, as the Parisian ballet dancers had a less flattering reputation in the late 19th century. Marie van Goethem, the model of the little dancer, was later fired from the opera - allegedly the reason was that she was often late and missed classes, but she did have a reputation too from what I've read. She kinda confirmed the myth of stage women with dubious moral, and the reviewer might have known that. Today posing for artists and being late would make her the coolest kid in school ( ... )
