Wouldn't the french disease be syphilis? Although that and pox both make you ugly, and i think they were mixed up alot.

I think they might mean that he either had syphilis OR pox? The document speaking of it ruining his fine complexion, so he might have sad some mysterious pox like rash they had not yet determined. Like you said, some stages of syphilis can look like pox, with purple or red bumps spread out over large areas.
