Summary: jinki is a star who happens to fall into jonghyun's lap one day, quite literally.
a/n: i was thinking about things to write and i eventually just came to think of howl's moving castle, and yeah. it was supposed to be key at first, as the star, but i figured onew might be better for the role haha. by the way, the "la"s are kind of...well, i was watching yunhanam recently...L O L
Jonghyun looks up at the sky and frowns at the starless expanse stretched out before him. The grass under his neck is comfortable and all, but if he can't see the stars twinkling up there, Jonghyun doesn't see a reason to lie around in the dark and risk getting bitten. So he picks himself up and walks up to the patio once more-starless-then trudges to the front lawn-still starless-and then back into his room, where he sits by the large, framed window beside his bed. He sighs.
Leaves knock against the pane to let themselves in and the brunet creaks the window open with a slight push, allowing the wind to continue its jog through his house. He leans out, just a little bit, and cranes his neck to see small clouds whiz by at record speed, and it's then when Jonghyun realizes that he's really bored. His notebook is untouched and his cell phone is dead, and for once, Jonghyun feels completely detached from the world.
The whirring really isn't obvious to him when he scans his backyard for imaginary ghosts and demons, and it only really becomes noticeable when Jonghyun sees the first twinkle of the night in the violet sky. He blinks once, twice, leaning out further to spot the buzzing ball that zips to and fro, out of vision and then right up in front of his face. Jonghyun mentally calculates the speed it's coming at and when the fizzing is the only thing he can hear above the cicadas and croaking frogs, Jonghyun screams.
His arms are around his head before he knows it and he shakes in his spot, scared that he might have been hit by a meteor, but when he opens his eyes to see a glowing ball in his lap, he becomes very confused. The heat doesn't kick in until Jonghyun sees the marred spot in his pants and he yelps.
It tumbles onto the carpet, cooling down as it rolls a bit. Shaking, Jonghyun eyes the rock that begins to glow blue, then white, then yellow, soon repeating the cycle of colors. He prods it with a toe then picks it up between two fingers. He inspects the rock and turns it in his palms, eyes wide and curious. The rock twinkles for a while longer before the colors stop their blinking, and Jonghyun lets out a soft sigh of relief. He throws it onto his dresser because he doesn't know what else to do with it, and then he shuffles about his house, drinking milk, dumping clothes and ironing socks.
Casting one last look at the black rock, Jonghyun shrugs and then slips out of his clothes and into his bed.
The drawer rustles on its stubby legs before a bright light reflects off the mirror, brightening the room with rays of red, blue and yellow. It groans, then stills completely, but the rock placed on the desk jumps in place. Shaking, the rock tumbles to the floor and then a soft cloud of dust disperses into the air, covering the ground in a thin layer of grey.
When it disperses, the rock splits in half and then a small ball of bright light bobs up and down, and it clears its throat.
"La, la," the ball sings, and it floats around the perimeter of the room, "la!"
It finally stops as he lingers close to the headboard of the bed, and as it buzzes lowly in the dark room, a small voice filters through the silence.
"What's this?" It floats above the hump underneath the thick blanket. "Looks comfortable." After circling the bed, it rests on the tip of the pillow just barely poking out from underneath the covers, and the ball begins to still and its light glows softly.
Jonghyun wakes up, but not without a struggle, as he tries to pull the covers off of his head like he always does. But he feels weight on his left side and he grunts, grumbles loudly, before twisting his body completely and yanking the covers from right under whatever the thing was. He looks to his left in his dazed state, but even his blurry vision can't hide the fact that there's a naked guy sleeping right beside him, legs thankfully curled to his left to hide his nakedness. And Jonghyun can't hold in his scream.
He tumbles out of the bed with a flail and he breathes heavily, eyes scanning his room wildly for a chair, for something to clobber the stranger on the head with. He hears rustling on the bed, and then a soft sigh, and Jonghyun carefully lifts his head and peeks over the edge of the bed.
The figure stretches his arms, rolls his neck around and hums a note before his own eyes, twinkling and blue then a warm brown, gaze down to meet Jonghyun's nervous ones.
And then he screams, Jonghyun screams, and then both topple to the floor again.
"Who-" Jonghyun squeaks from under his desk. "Who the hell are you?"
The boy pops up again, all shock gone from his face and a bright, bright smile replacing it in its stead, "I'm-"
"Stop!" Jonghyun flails his arms around and keeps his eyes down on the ground. "Cover yourself or something!" Bristling, the boy quickly takes the covers and wraps it around his thin waist, deep blush staining his cheeks; he grumbles something to signal Jonghyun that everything's okay (though everything is far, far, far from okay) and then the brunet pushes himself onto his feet to stand tall. His eyes are slits as they check the squirming boy up and down.
"So," he starts, slowly making his way around the bed to approach the seemingly glowing boy, "who the heck are you?"
Clearing his throat, the boy stands tall and almost lets the blankets slip down from his waist-but Jonghyun's heated glare quickly reminds him and he pulls it completely up to his chest then squawks, "I-I'm Onew!"
"Onew?" Jonghyun echoes. "Your name is Onew."
Onew smiles brightly, two rows of slightly crooked teeth illuminating the bedroom with their light, "Yup! I'm Onew, I come from up there." He points up and frowns at the ceiling. "Well, I mean-"
"-From the sky," Jonghyun interrupts, eyes still narrow slits as he approaches the dazed boy with quaking steps. "You're saying you came from up there, in the sky. You're saying you just dropped down from there and landed in my bed, naked." He pulls at the down covers in disgust. "Why are you naked?"
"Well, I don't know myself." Onew spins in his spot, trying to look around him, and then he picks up his feet which Jonghyun realizes are marred, and he begins to feel bad in the pit of his stomach. "I mean, I didn't ask for this, but I think I might've fallen, and then-" He quickly cuts himself off and inspects both his hands-and thus letting the blanket fall to his feet, much to Jonghyun's dismay-before he stutters, "W-Why am I a human?"
"What, you're saying you aren't?" Onew's large eyes look up into his, and Jonghyun gulps. "Okay, I take that as a yes."
"Look," Onew shakily starts and then bends over to pick up the covers again (Jonghyun reminds himself to ask his mom to thoroughly wash that out), "I'm a star. I'm a star that dropped from the sky and I'm not supposed to be here! I-I don't belong here, and I don't know why I'm a human right now, and-" He throws himself on top of Jonghyun's bed and wails, "What am I doing here?"
Frustrated, Jonghyun barks, "I don't know!" He points to his window. "Now get out of my house before I call the police!"
Onew frowns. "You know, I really didn't mean for this to happen, so can't you be-be a bit more lenient on me?" He flutters his eyelashes and Jonghyun reels back in disgust. Onew sighs heavily, arms wrapped tightly around his chest. "I'm serious, I don't know how to get back up there, so you have to be easy on me, all right? Once I figure it out, I'll get right out of here." He takes small, cautious steps, closer to Jonghyun who tries his best not to throw the dresser right at him.
As Onew makes his way closer to the brunet, he wobbles this way and that, back and forth, before he finally lets out a yelp and falls face first into the carpeted ground. Jonghyun blinks down at him.
"I can't see," Onew whines. "My eyesight sucks." He grapples at the ground for a bit and Jonghyun sighs in pity.
"Hold on." Turning his back for a second, Jonghyun rummages through a few cabinets and drawers, eyes lingering on the scorched spot of his dresser, and he finally pulls out a pair of glasses from beneath a pile of loose papers. "Well, I have this." He tosses it over to Onew who accepts it with grateful hands, and as the so-called star slips them on, he gasps.
"This!" he exclaims. His face brightens by shades and shades. "I can see!"
"Great," Jonghyun murmurs, "so kindly let yourself out of my house. Now."
Onew blinks owlishly at the brunet, but Jonghyun doesn't leave from his spot on the ground. Quietly, Onew looks down at his bare legs.
"I, uh-Can I just have something to, I don't know, wear? What do you guys call it again?"
Smacking his forehead with a fist, Jonghyun fishes for a pair of boxers, loose sweatpants, and a t-shirt, tossing them at the unsuspecting star standing shakily before him. "Here, put those on, and then kindly let yourself out."
Onew struggles a bit and Jonghyun has to cover his eyes because the boy takes a lot longer than necessary to put on his boxers and cover his ass, but after minutes of grunting and silent cursing, Onew stands before Jonghyun, shoulders slouched and pout set.
"I don't like this," he whines and the dark brown eyes look up at Jonghyun quizzically, flashing blue every once in a while.
Jonghyun frowns and then nearly kicks the window open, yelling at the boy to get the hell out before he threw him out.
Jonghyun comes back from school, arms filled with books and eyes drooping. He barely manages to stumble into his bedroom with a quick hello to his mother in the kitchen and his older sister blasting 90's songs from her room. When his feet finally hit the soft cushioning of his carpet, Jonghyun falls onto his knees and rolls about, humming to the songs slipping through from under his door.
"You know, I think I remember this song. Some radio waves reached us once, and I know it was a hit."
Screaming, Jonghyun reaches for his sharpened pencils and grips them tightly in his sweaty palms. He sees his window opened completely, free to let in anything that desired to sleep in Jonghyun's room for the night, and from his window, he spots Onew perched on the bough of the large tree in his yard, relatively close to his room. Jonghyun screams again.
"I-Hey, those things hurt!" Onew yelps and his arms flail around him to protect himself from the onslaught of graphite and erasers. "Look, I don't have anywhere to sleep and I need some help, you-Can you stop?"
"Get away from me," Jonghyun seethes as he scrambles to the ledge of his window, fingers gripping the wood tightly. "I swear to God, you are going to drive me crazy and I can't afford insanity when testing is coming up!" And with that, he slams the window shut, effectively muting Onew's shrill whining.
Jonghyun turns his back completely so he doesn't have to see Onew's face at all (though the image still lingers, because what normal being sits in a tree-oh right). However after a few minutes into his homework, he starts to hear music filter into his room, and not even from his sister's room. Slowly, he turns around in his chair, the wood creaking under his shifting weight, and he sees Onew still in the tree, arm slung over a branch for support. He watches his mouth open and close and widen to syllables and then it finally registers for Jonghyun-Onew sings.
The brunet stares down at his open music notebook, still blank and waiting for him to scribble in it. He clears his throat and then stands up, fixing his shirt to make sure he looks presentable, and then walks to the window.
"-un p'tit oiseau qui prit sa volée."
"What're you singing?"
Onew looks up from his lap, stares at Jonghyun peering out the window with his brows knit. "À La Volette. It's a French song."
"Didn't think you'd know French," Jonghyun murmurs before he falls back with a light push of the heels of his palms. "All right, why don't you come in? You look like you're dying."
However the boy doesn't move as his wide eyes scan Jonghyun's, and then he brushes his light-hued hair from his eyes. "You're-You're really letting me-?"
"Yeah, yeah, hurry up before I close this on you." The brunet huffs, turning his back once more on the overwhelmed boy.
"La!" the boy sings and just as Jonghyun turns around to shoot him an odd look, he flings himself from the tree and towards the window. Jonghyun opens his mouth to shout in absolute horror but, whether or not his eyes were tricking him, he sees Onew's body literally glide through the window and onto the floor. The boy, smiling giddily and like a child, looks up at Jonghyun through fluorescent, crescent eyes, and they spark blue.
"Thanks, you!"
Jonghyun looks down at him with brows raised. "Jonghyun."
"Huh?" Onew scrambles up to his feet and dusts his knees, cheeks flushed in excitement. "What'd you say?"
"My name," Jonghyun says again and suddenly his eyes drop to his feet because he feels embarrassment wash over him.
"Jonghyun?"
"What?"
He looks up to see Onew smiling cheekily at him. "What a weird name."
Jonghyun's face falls. "Okay, that's it, get-" Onew quickly throws his arms up and then dives under the covers of Jonghyun's bed (the brunet wonders how he honestly does that without hurting himself when he seems like one to trip over his feet all the time). The boy rolls around a bit and Jonghyun rolls his eyes at his childish attitude. "Hey, look."
"Yes, Jonghyun?"
"You have to make sure to always wear clothes around me."
"Yup."
"And you can't glide in the air like that, you gave me a friggin' heart attack."
"Yes, Jonghyun."
Jonghyun blinks. "What is up with you?" Onew just smiles brightly again before hiding his head under the soft covers and singing about how soft everything is to the skin. Smirking, Jonghyun slips off his socks and looks through his closet for new clothes. "Look, wear this and-"
A bright flash catches his attention from the corner of his eye and Jonghyun jolts in his spot, turning around to see Onew's body gone and only a small ball of light floating above the covers. His jaw drops.
"Yeah, I guess I won't be needing those!" the star laughs though Jonghyun's doesn't find anything funny in it. "I-uh, I'll go to sleep first." The ball drops onto Jonghyun's pillow and then begins to glow softly, the white light blending with his pillowcase.
Jonghyun rubs his hands up and down his face. He doesn't know how he's supposed to hide a boy-slash-star in his room without his mom finding out. Quickly slipping through his door, Jonghyun brushes up and sighs as he walks back into his bedroom again, eyes warily landing on the ball of light underneath his covers. He turns the lights off and isn't surprised to see the outline of Onew on his bed, simply grunting before crawling into bed.
Just as he's about to fall asleep, Onew chirps, "Thanks, Jonghyun."
"Yeah, all right."
"Thank you so much. Really. I mean, I'm so thankful."
"And I'm really tired, so sh-"
"I mean, I could seriously sing about it. Like-like, la, la, I give thanks to Jonghyun, my life-"
"Onew, shut up."
Onew falls silent then but the star begins to vibrate close to his hair in what Jonghyun assumes to be laughter. "You called me by my name!"
Jonghyun groans loudly before pulling the covers over his head, shifting his body completely away from the star. "Just go to sleep."
Silence reigns before, "Thanks, J-"
"Shut up!"
But despite his bitter bark (which seemed to have shut Onew up because the ball of light fell silent a second after) Jonghyun closes his eyes with a small smile on his lips, knowing fully well that an oddball like Onew would brighten his days just a bit more with his music.
