It was an illness. That’s what the textbooks in health class called it. Alcoholism. His whole family was sick then and there was a chance, the textbooks said, that he would catch that sickness someday.
You can’t feel angry at a sickness, you can’t blame yourself for a sickness, you just deal with it a day at a time.
But it wasn’t. Xander knew the truth. It was a night spent hiding from the screaming, it was a holiday spent alone, it was an emptiness and a longing for something better.
