Faith remembers the first time.
As he touches the ice pack to her bruised cheek carefully, it’s a cool breeze at a window ledge.
The shower's scalding, sluicing blood and grime down the drain. Not as hot as cooking oil and a naked flame on bared skin, though.
Wes stabs the knife into the girl’s shoulder, twists it sharply, and Faith sees blood on a shard of glass.
The junkie shrieks, an agonized wail; but not as loud as his tongue-bitten silence.
“You haven’t changed. You can’t.”
His words are blunt, and hurt more than her fist to his head.
