Apparently my car has been possessed by something angry. Important bits (and that's about as specific as my car knowledge allows me to be) have stopped functioning

I've had recurrent thermostat problems with my (finally-paid-off-as-of-this-week-yehaaaaw!) Explorer for the past few years, and it's been quite a pain in the ass. It took me forever to diagnose it, first I thought I was having radiator issues, then I thought I was leaking coolant somehow...finally I figured that it must be a thermostat issue because there was nothing else that would make sense! I ended up fixing it two years ago, again six months later (because I hadnt done it right the first time), again nine months after that (excessive heat had melted portions of it down), and then again last April (excessive heat, again).
Since then I haven't had trouble, but I've been hearing horror stories lately from friends who are having similar issues. Such is life in the desert, I guess. One hundred and fifty degree road temperatures probably don't make things any easier on the engine, eh?
It turned out to be something to do with the power steering mechanism. I've had the car since January and the power steering has never worked so I never paid any attention to it. It showed it's displeasure by attacking the rest of the car. My father fixed it so not only is my car not overheating but I have power steering. I suppose it's a good thing but it just doesn't seem safe to be able to turn so easily.
The same thing went wrong four different times? Sounds like a nightmare really.
