lets say I was actually thinking of getting an iPad. I don't own an iPod or an iPhone and I've forgotten my login to iTunes... if I ever had one. So we're talking about blank slate here

Good question. I've mostly gotten my iDevices after seeing Cas play with hers for a couple of months, so I think I can safely say I've never rushed blindly into purchasing one either.
I picked up an iPod originally for two reasons - aesthetics and simplicity. The MP3s I was familiar with were awkward, unreliable, and ugly (CD-based, LCD displays, etc.); the iPod was none of those. I don't use it nearly as much as I used to, but when I do, it's still unmatched (as far as I know or care) in terms of what and how it can play and how easily it can store it. My only gripe would be that you can't play OGGs or FLACs on it (not that I have any of the latter).
The iPhone was very different. I have NEVER liked cellphones; I don't much like talking on the phone in the first place, I'm a texter at heart. I did have one for emergencies, though. I tried texting on it (a Motorola RAZR2), and it sucked. Fussy keys, lousy keyboarding schema... it just wasn't comfortable to use. I'd looked a Blackberry once or twice (and more recently, had borrowed
