summary early morning phone calls. written for
lunar_art It’s early in the morning when Sergio’s cell phone rings. Tango music plays from the speaker, tinny and distorted, so unlike the usual flamenco that rings out. Sergio grunts and gropes around the bedside table until he reaches his phone.
“You changed my ringtone, fucker,” he mumbles. Gonzalo laughs.
“Just for when I’m calling,” he says.
Sergio scrubs a hand through his hair and blinks a few times, still not properly awake. “What’s up?”
“Shh, don’t wake up,” Gonzalo soothes. His voice is honey low and soft, and Sergio flops back down against his pillows, the phone cradled to his ear. “There was a commercial of you on and I just wanted to hear your voice.”
“Mmm,” Sergio rumbles. “Why’s that?”
“’Cause I miss you,” Gonzalo says, and it comes so easily, like it’s natural to say. Like it’s necessary. Sergio grins sleepily.
“Miss you too,” he murmurs. “When d’you get back to Madrid?”
“August.”
“Too long,” Sergio says, too tired to make his voice sound stern. “Come back earlier.”
“My house won’t be opened,” Gonzalo tells him. Sergio laughs softly.
“Silly. Stay with me.”
“Yeah?”
Sergio nods, and then realizes that Gonzalo can’t see him. “Yeah.”
