THIS POST IS BEAUTIFUL. I have been looking forever for a good paranormal book that doesn't have some couple in it. Not for your reasons, but because I'm just dead tired of it. I even stopped listening to the book "Domain of the Dead" because 2/3rds into a great story with zombies and being shot and horror and child endangerment, the author starts into this rambling schpel about the head doctor and his girlfriend and his sex life. I'm like "Are you serious? Could this be any more of a blatant self insert?"

Books: Three Men in a Boat. Hilarious story. I Uploaded the Audio Book. It's completely general, no goopy love story at all. It's just about three old timey British men taking an old timey British boat trip. There's a doggy in it, too.
Room. It's sorta disturbing, though.
Children's books are pretty good for getting away from that crap, too. The Ramona series by Beverly Cleary (except for one chapter in "Ramona's World", but it's minor)
Television: Black Books and The IT Crowd and Father Ted.
