Reading about the games of the 90s reminded me of growing up, I ended up talking more with the boys in my classes because they played video games and none of the girls really did. My dad always played video games so I grew up watching him and when I was old enough I started playing too, a mix of NES, SNES and computer games. Back then I never had any issues but now...its one of the big reasons I don't go onto any of the public forums to 'hang out' with other players online, I don't want to deal with the BS of being a female gamer. Its the same in the comic world too its ridiculous.
But this article is a great read and it was very interesting how everything got started and what it turned into.
I like the article and in some ways it also reflects some people for completely wanting to stay away from (and even shun) the "Dude Bro" games as well. I think it's hard to appreciate everything we can have now as well. You can play Journey, and Mario, and Zelda, and Bioshock, and even Madden and 2K Sports games, because fuck it why not we have SOOOO MUCH now. While I may be annoyed by how sports gamers and fighting gamers talk sometimes. I also love how excited they get whenever they pull off some string of moves and plays. That's hard to pull back from both sides and see how much there is now, and this is coming from a "Hard Core" Nintendo lover from the 80-90's. The only sad part might be how few people actually play other kinds of games because of a hostile community and in some cases how few are willing to accept others.
