I've never heard of anything happening like this in my area, for the most part people are totally cool with different or alternative styling where I live (Toronto). But, there are a ton of hate crimes and it's just so disgusting that people still act this way and are brought up this ignorant.

Yeah, I'm feeling lucky I live in suburban New Jersey.

Well, yeah, sometimes there's nerdfights between different subcultures (Otaku vs Furries, Videogamers vs Tabletop Gamers, etc), but it never goes beyond playful name calling and a resolving group visit to Taco Bell.

i live just outside of toronto and when i first started dying my hair and cutting it in short, fun hair-cuts it was only in the city that people gave me flack for it. (this was about 10 years ago but things haven't changed that much!)

also, i was never a goth but hung out at the goth bars on queen and there were always people calling everyone vampires and losers and all sorts of terrible things because of their black hair or clothes or whatever.

That's strange.
I've never really witnessed anything like that myself, but maybe because I've never been dressed in that sort of way.
I'm sorry to hear that.

That is just so horrible! I can't understand the irrational hatred our society has for the goth culture!
I live near a huge mall, and all sorts of people pass through it. I have never, NEVER, felt menaced by ANY of the "Young Persons in Black" who shop and work there, no matter how many of them were in the group. They're quiet, they're polite, and they don't push into anyone else's space.
But they're SCARY! And probably SATANISTS!
OH! it's so infuriating!

I find that alot of the time, people who are being singled out as "weird" or whatever... are seriously some of the nicest, most kindhearted people that you'll ever meet. Of course, there are always exceptions, but... you know ;]

I fancied myself a goth when I was 14-16, and felt the wrath of the mall rent-a-cops all the time. If I even paused to check my cell phone or something, they would immediately come over to me and yell about loitering. My friend was looking through my digital camera one time, and this random cop took it from him, and was like, "I'M CONFISCATING THIS. YOU CAN PICK IT UP WHEN THE MALL CLOSES".

Of course I made a huge stink about it and got my camera back, but honestly -- "normally dressed" people took pictures of each other all the time and the security guards didn't bat an eye. It's so weird that goths earn so much ire.

I've got 4 tattoos and a few piercings (none of which you can see if I'm clothed) and I love to be in a supermarket in my normal clothes and overhear people mouthing off about tattoos and piercings. I just walk up to them and challenge them to guess how many I've got and where they are.
It's funny though, I grew up in a really small town and noone seemed to bat an eyelid at the kids who dressed goth, skater, emo whatever. They didn't know the terms so it was just passed off as kids being kids. About the only thing I really loved about smalltown.

Stuff like that happens when I go out grocery shopping all the time. I'm usually out with my dad but he'll be in another aisle or something and I'll be by myself. I have a decently large tattoo on my calf and I look rather young in the face (for being 19) and I heard someone commenting rather loudly to their scantily clad 12 year old about "how could her parents condone tattoos how disgusting they must be evil people" and all those cliches....while her 12 year was wearing a tank top and short shorts.

i guess i'm easily categorized as goth, and was especially at 16. i got yelled at a lot in little cities and it always made a little nervous when i was alone. i figured nobody would ever hurt me but it's kind of weird to be called out sort of negatively by total strangers...?

because of looking goth i was questioned for a crime involving some other kid in my town stealing a head from a cemetery. buhhh.

I used to have a badge from them : )
All funds went to supporting the charity/campaign/whatever it was.

I wonder where it went.
