I saw the DVD is a shop yesterday, and the blurb at the back of the case went something along the lines of "When a madman named Khan..." o.O

I mean seriously, even before the movie not even the marketing was very subtle about it. I was very careful with spoilers but even I knew that one in advance (but wasn't sure it was true). All in all this Khan thing was a disaster from start to finish: if IMDB doesn't even know who the actor is going to be, but list a Khan like 3 years ago, I would probably avoid including him in my new movie, but hey what do I know of making movies, right? ;)

I think they really lost an opportunity to convince everyone it was Khan and then have it be Gary Mitchell and let people be ACTUALLY surprised.

This would have been absolutely beautiful.

And if Orci and Kurtzman are reading this: THIS SHIP HAS SAILED. GARY MITCHELL IS NOT A GOOD IDEA ANYMORE. THINK OF SOMETHING ORIGINAL FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE FOR GODS SAKE.

Yeah, the death scene was overblown and Spock's "KHAAAAN" just felt like a bad Shatner impersonation. When you're dealing with something THAT iconic, the way to go is to take it in a totally different direction than the audience is expecting, not try for an exact replica. I actually laughed in the theater at the KHAAAN.

BTW: I saw Marina Sirtis speak at a con yesterday, and she was talking about how Majel Barret dragged her to a con before TNG aired, and the fans practically booed her off the stage. And how all the TOS fans hated the TNG cast at first, etc etc. It wasn't til about 2-3 seasons in, once they'd proven themselves, that the old school fans started to warm up to the idea of a new star trek at all. So I guess you weren't alone.

Yeah, the first two seasons are... not great. So I can't fault anyone for not getting into it at first, although not even giving it a CHANCE seems rather uncharitable.

I guess it's hard for a TNG trekkie to see "they were still making movies with the original cast" as a problem, given that they went ahead and made three more series while TNG was still either on the air or making movies. :^P

Since we tend to use subtitles here at home, I noticed something I didn't in the theater....that the ship they used to go to the Kronos was a trader ship they got "in the Mudd incident a few months ago". WHAT? They've already met Harry Mudd and we didn't see it?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! It could've been "Star Trek Into Mudd" ! *sobs uncontrollably*

You didn't notice that in the theater? :) Pity, that was one of the references I counted as funny and well done. But then, it was still early in the movie... ;)

Nope. By that point I'd turned into a human popsicle as the theater had the air conditioner on "meat locker" levels (I'm sure anticipating a big crowd which didn't show), so I apparently didn't hear it due to my teeth chattering.

I'd originally hoped that Cumby would be Harry Mudd, as though he's thin I think he could've done the role justice, maybe given him a bit of an edge too. Oh well.

That's actualy a areference to the prequel comic book I believe. Harry Mudd was give a half-Bajoran daughter or something.
