Johnny Weir - Diva of the Year

It’s difficult to deny the dynamism of Johnny Weir’s ice skating. Since he entered the sport 14 years ago at what many would consider the advanced age of 12, he has made two Olympic appearances, won three U.S. championships, and is currently ranked 12th in the world by the International Skating Union. But, ultimately, it’s his commitment to glamour and pageantry and his dexterous, playful handling of the controversies that dog him off the ice that have made him such a fascinating and beloved figure.

Studio 54 might have invented the velvet rope, but sexuality was one thing co-owner Steve Rubell didn’t discriminate against. After the club opened in 1977, he told Interview magazine, “It’s bisexual. Very bisexual. And that’s how we choose the crowd too.” A celebration of the highest order, no one came to Studio 54 to hide who they were, which is why so many gay icons found a community there. Shortly after, the AIDS epidemic would call upon and galvanize that same community to take on a far more serious endeavor.
