Japanese figure skater Akiko Suzuki has revealed how she is relishing every moment of her Olympic dream after years of struggling with anorexia.

Suzuki had been one of the rising stars of Japanese women's figure skating before her battle with the eating disorder which almost ended her promising career at the age of just 16.

But at the mature age of 24 she has finally made it to her first Olympic Games in Vancouver, alongside former world champion teammates Mao Asada, 19, and Miki Ando, 22.

"For a while I wasn't feeling well so for a year I wasn't able to compete," explained Suzuki, who missed the 2003-2004 season.

"Later when I did return I could not expect or anticipate being here today so I took every step tentatively.

"People pushed me forward so I could be here today.

"Everything happened so I could be here. That is how I look back at the past."

Suzuki reveals that she had been inspired watching Shizuka Arakawa's victory at the 2004 world championships and this had helped put her on the road to recovery.

Arakawa went on to win Japan's first Olympic figure skating gold in Turin at the age of 24 years.

"I was watching the Olympics with my coach and cheering Arakawa when she got gold," she explains.

Suzuki has had her most successful season.

She won the Cup of China and found herself on the national podium for the first time, taking silver behind Mao Asada, and also finished second behind Asada at the Four Continents.

"I can't stop saying to myself a few times a day 'the Olympics is great!'" she said. "I'm getting to know those other athletes. This will have a very good impact not only for here but for my future life.

"This is my first Olympic Games and I'm very nervous and moved about coming here. I really have high hopes and expectations."

She opens her Olympic bid on Tuesday among a tough field which includes reigning world champion Kim Yu-Na of South Korea and her own teammates Asada and Ando.

"Yu-Na also competed with me in the Grand Prix final," said Suzuki, who finished third in the event.

"I thought she was a great athlete and skater. The fact that she is a great skater doesn't affect me because I'm just skating my own programme.

"Of course, in competition the points are important, the ranks are important. But I've always wanted to transcend that.

"I want to perform through my heart and I want to communicate that essence to the audience."

::Some Words on her Future::

from Goldenskate

The 25-year-old is planning to compete next season and her goal is to skate in her home country at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. But she also has made plans for the time after her competitive career. "In the future, I'd like to skate in shows and I'd like to dedicate myself to choreography," Suzuki revealed. She looks up to Shae-Lynn Bourne in this field. With her dedication, love for skating, and character on the ice, Suzuki no doubt should become a successful choreographer.

Some other cute things from the same article

-Shae-Lynn picked WSS for Akiko because she reminded her of the main character
-She also tried swimming, playing the piano, and calligraphy as a child
-She keeps a stature of Ganeesh everywhere with her to calm her down when she's nervous
