Terrible joke, but I saw this today and was surprised as anything once I google translated it!

It seems Brian Joubert is serious about the pair skating thing and is even going to Russia to do it!

There's a video of the news report about it, but alas they dub Russian over Brian's words so I have no idea what he's saying. I noticed that he doesn't ( Read more... )

This is interesting, it seems like he was just helping train with Daria Popova after all and wasn't actually going to pair up with her.

I wish he would have gone into ice dancing since there is more longevity IMO but the learning curve switching from singles to doubles isn't as steep. I wish he would pair with Caitlin Yankowskas though!

He's not especially tall, so there might be a problem both athletically and aesthetically. At least he has the jumps and was able to show a life (on the floor) I'm surprised it's not ice dancing. It's not as demanding as pairs.

I actually wonder if pairs might be better suited to his body type. In the past he's always gained weight during the offseason and then had to visibly slim down in the fall to get the quad consistent and flexibility for spins. Pairs would require him to have a stronger upperbody which probably wouldn't be difficult for him as he already has a great core and it would probably be easy for him to bulk up in the arms, based on his body type, for the lifts and throws. Since he'd be going down from a 4T/3A to nothing more difficult than 3S/3T, he can afford to bulk up a little without it affecting the easier jumps--as opposed to established male pairs skaters who never had a 3A in the first place and so have to balance being strong enough for the lifts/throws with being slim enough to rotate a 3T.

Years ago I imagined Brian post-retirement, sitting around with his mom, staring at each other all day and saying nothing. Every once in a while, Brian would get up and feed his fish and make a count of any fry and it would just go on like that, day after day. Then the fish end up dead. Who killed them? Brian goes insane.

So if this is what he must do to prevent this possible future (don't forget I have a gift for prophecy), then more power to him, but I don't think this will end well.
