I think he was rumored to be training a quad but no one really believed he was coming back for Sochi considering his recent competition history (or lack thereof)
Actually dude was attempting quads at times in competition around/post Torino. But usually with mixed results hence no quad in Vancouver. After that IDK.
It would be nice to see Stephane again but I think he was quite happy with his achievements and doesn't have any drive to come back. Also he's done some pro stuff and I think that makes it illegal for him to do amateur stuff again (???)
Is Switzerland more strict about that, because I totally saw Plushy skate to James Bond in America. Legitimate question, I don't know the details of how exactly he got around that - was it just Russia pulling strings for him?
Honestly? No clue. I just remember that when Stephane was skating in that TV show competition for pros with Shizuka everyone was making a big deal out of how after this he will not be able to go back to amateur skating anymore.
Anyway, I guess he could have possibly come back as he has a pretty strong psyche (unlike poor Jeremy :/) so he could have maybe made it to the Olympic team. Medalling would have been super unlikely tho with how much is happening in the international field rn. Much as I have a nostalgic fondness of the bro, gotta admit that. IDK what he wanted to get out of these Olympics tho. If another medal he probs would have been disappointed if just a chance to skate one last time at such a huge event then yeah, I guess (and maybe getting a team medal).
Plushenko is unlikely to get an individual medal but got a team one and most importantly seems very happy to be able to have this "goodbye", so maybe Evan wanted something like that.
I've never competed in a sport, so I have no idea of the mindset of people in skating. It's weird, though, how some people got their OGM and immediately retired/ went pro, even when they were young enough to keep going for another quad (Yamaguchi, Kulik, Lipinski, Baiul, Hughes). And then there are those like Plushenko, Kwan, Lysacek, who keep going and going and going, even as their poor bodies are screaming "uncle!" I realize the pro opportunities are just not there now the way they were in the 1990s, but sweet frilly jeebuz, people. Do you want to be able to walk when you're 40

For Plushy, well technically he did retire after 2006 (he was only 23?), and had to be convinced by Yana to try for Vancouver...so I guess after Vancouver he thought, what's another 4 years esp considering Sochi would be on home soil? I absolutely agree that if the Olympics were someone else he wouldn't be competing now. And I think Plushy's motivation also comes from wanting to show something to his haters...he is a rags-to-riches story after all and had a pretty awful childhood so I'm sure his attitude is also "You can't get rid of me yet
