P. S. James Ellingworth, the author of this article, was one of the participants of this Twitter conversation way back in Nov. 19, in which he and two other haters journalists known to be unfriendly to Plushenko were discussing the idea that Plushenko would only want to skate the SP in the team competition at Sochi.
After the LP at Russian Nationals, a reporter asked Plushy, directly, "which event will you choose, team or individual"? That was the true context of Plushy's much-reported statement that he would only skate the team competition. However, it turned out that at the time, he had a totally wrong understanding about the "rule clarification" that the Russian skating fed. obtained. Once he was told the truth, Plushy immediately made it clear that he would participate in both the team and the individual competitions if chosen.
It's interesting what got reported in the media, and what didn't. Talk about pouring poison...

My take on this - he'll compete in the team event, and if it doesn't go well, then he'll become injured and Maxim will step in.
