Still not many details. I guess they are leaving it up to the skaters for exactly what they want to do for their team programs.
Is it just me or was that a complete non-answer about team events at Worlds?
Well I guess it was nice of France to offer. XD
It's true that synchro requires a fuckton of people and support. I'd still rather see it at the Olympics than a team event. House them outside the dang village if it's an issue.
GOD DAMN IT, RUSSIAN FED, WRITE THE FUCKING LETTER ALREADY I WILL WRITE IT FOR YOU IF YOU DON'T HAVE 5 MINUTES
Me too (about the synchro)...not only is an existing event it's also about respect too. It is a World sport under the ISU and it seems like it sends the message it's lesser than when it isn't included at the Olympics. They should find a freaking way.
I know I would. The cost of being in synchro also must be a little cheaper since they share ice space and coaches between so many people. It's the benefit of being a team sport. They at least deserve the chance.
Sure, it's a concern that by 2014 there won't even be 10 countries that have a strong entry in each discipline, but what concerns me more about the team event is 1) how skaters will be chosen for it and 2) what programs they will do.
Will it be one of the same skaters as an individual event? Will it HAVE to be the top skater from a country? Could, say, Jeremy come in first at Nats and then still allow Adam to skate the team event if Adam wanted to? I'm sure some skaters will be down for it while others would want to avoid it, depending on their competitive style, fitness, etc.
Would they perform the same programs as in the individual events? One would hope not, but I can't see it working out any other way. That could get mad boring for the audience. Skaters MIGHT view it as a good way to work out kinks or nerves in a program, but who knows.
There's a lot of details yet to be worked out on this thing.
I'm guessing it would be up to each country to decide how to play this? They also said that it would be allowed to have different skaters for the short and long programs. So, I suspect a lot of it will come down to a game of strategy.
I suppose you won't need a strong entry in each discipline, actually. You just need to have relatively more strong disciplines than other countries (*coughrussiacough*), and it's possibly preferable to have some disciplines with two strong entries (or at least one strong and one decent).
Lol @ his answer on synchro. Is synchronized swimming a part of the summer olympics? I thought it was but I can't remember. Maybe not.
I still think the team event is silly. There should be like an national individual team and then the runner-up or 3rd place people can fill the national team whereas the individual skaters can focus on their individual divisional event.
Though, I guess if the inidividual competitors feel like they can do it (and aren't pressured into it like the last Team Trophy), it's their choice. But then would that be the same programs? :/ It's just not a good idea, imo.
Synchro swimming is a part of the summer olympics- but a team in that sport has far fewer members than in synchro skating. Also, synchro skating is a relatively young sport, it was only created in the 1980s...
