It's interesting. They apparently knew exactly where to look, although it remains to be seen...no pun intended...if they've actually found the old guy. On the other hand, supposedly nobody knows exactly where Hitler's bunker was. The most common answer is that it's under "that parking lot" but it's been sealed and buried because they feared it becoming a shrine. I can understand that thinking, but it's odd that the actual location was "lost." There's actually a lot of underground "stuff" in Berlin that is constantly being "discovered anew."

Happens in all cities, where you just have layers and layers of things. In Cologne, whenever they dig a hole for building, they have the archaeologists there, because they always find something - Roman ships, medieval things... And of course, if one is really unlucky, one can find an unexploded bomb while gardening; there's a lot of those still around.

Of course all the findings are slightly offset by the fact that they managed to lose the entire historical archive of the City of Cologne in a big hole while building a new subway line. Only in Cologne...

You're correct, and especially regarding the Landesarchiv in Köln. I've been in the old building...when it still stood, several times, and since that time have struggled to find things after the collapse. Hopefully they can make sense of everything when the materials are all settled in their new home. The folks at the old building were very helpful, and tried to remain so even after the collapse ( ... )

I so adore archaeology! It would be so cool if it does turn out to be him. I'm kind of amazed they can find a relative!
