Nation’s Smallest State Thinks Big When it Comes to Offshore Wind Farms

Oct 20, 2011 16:40

Europe is having a love affair with offshore wind-energy farms, and no wonder. The wind is stronger and steadier out at sea than it is on most land areas, and you can build turbines close to population centers without having to compete for real estate. Wind power is also one way to meet the world’s growing energy needs without fouling the ( Read more... )

Good on Rhode Island indeed (particularly for ensuring the Narragansetts got a say)! We'll see what happens next.

I think a lot of other states are going to move forward with similar plans. People have been closely watching the SAMP process here in RI to see how it went. Now that it has been approved by the feds I think other states will be more inclined to sink money into their own plans.

It is kind of a big race right now for the wind and sustainable energy people.

Currently, there is millions of dollars invested in the research and development of wind turbines in Ohio where I am at. I personally know several researchers, graduate students, and manufacturers that are working very had on this issue.

I have been to so many presentations about these issues that it is so cool to see all of the enthusiasm that everyone has.

*chuckles* Being Dutch I can only laugh at this, sorry... Seriously, here the wind mills are PART of the view, so to say. Cheap, unending energy source with a very good investment-gain rate... And they complain about the view. Only you.

Go Rhode Island for having sense!

(also, no offence meant to anyone who doesn't oppose the idea of windmills because it'd spoil the view)
