Cops will wear bulletproof skin

Sep 24, 2011 13:53

Soldiers, police officers and heads of state will soon be able to make themselves bulletproof, without the need for bulky body armor.

By fusing genes from goats and spiders, researchers have made sheets of human skin bulletproof. Soon, they'll be able to splice silk-making genes into living humans.

I saw the interview on this on CNN. The researchers, while excited that a tiny .22LR bullet did not penetrate the engineered skin, admit that the target's bones and organs will still be shattered or pulped by the kinetic energy from the bullet.

And instead of trying to get this to integrate with a living human, a better solution might be to make super-leather and build garments out of that. This would actually help the impact problem, as then reinforcing materials or plate can be incorporated to absorb kinetic damage.

Yeah, I agree. On the surface it sounds awesome, but then you realize that not penetrating the skin doesn't mean no damage. Would much prefer better body armor is made.

Agree, the idea of bulletproof leather as a material is almost more interesting - you might be able theoretically to create parts for light aircraft out of it.

Yeah, I can't imagine wanting to actually change my skin in a permanent fashion. Just give me plain old body armor, thanks. Ugh, the thought of that is so gross!

This is like that videogame! Deus Ex: Human Revolution! Genetically engineered body upgrades!

I'm curious, will this skin age like normal? Probably, huh. Does this mean that a person couldn't be knifed? That would be cool!

Although if they're testing bullets, a bullet is probably more blunt than a knife. hmm.

he's right a lot, it's like punctuation buried in sentence upon sentence of manic insanity and venom - and, of course, error

This sounds really, really cool.

But +1 to all the folks who'd rather bulletproof leather.
