It takes a century and a half of political imagination, heroic toil and, to be sure, great geopolitical luck to build a country like Canada. It takes but a year or two of hubris, lassitude and ignorance for the whole thing to be lost.

I wonder how many québécois are on ontd...

I was born and raised in a small city right in front of the Saint-Laurent River. Everyone there spoke French. If you asked someone which country they were from, most of the people there would answer "Québec" without even thinking about it. Growing up, you knew you were in Canada, but it didn't feel like it. It felt like Québec. Québec is a nation with its own language and culture and all that jazz, but more than that, Québec is a province that has been more on the left side of the political spectrum and that has found itself having very different opinion than the rest of Canada on important issues. Most of the people who want Québec's independence don't hate English speakers, they don't hate Canada - they just feel different and they just want different things, and it's me, not you, well except for the part where you tried to assimilate me but I guess we can get pass that since we were way worse to aboriginal people . Honestly, I don't really care anymore whether or not Québec will be ( ... )

I was born and raised in Ontario. I heard all the rhetoric of Meech Lake growing up, and I remember the referendum clearly, and the look of panic on Peter Mansbridge's face during the returns. Moi, j'aime Quebec. It's different, ouais, and that's a good thing. Nous sommes encore meilleur ensemble. Quebec and its people, all its people, are part of our history, and we wouldn't be the same country without them.
