Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP’s candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, suggested in an interview that it was time to “look at or overturn” the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Where's CNN in reporting on Akin? Unlike Christine O'Donnell or that guy that ran for governor of New York, Todd Akin is more than likely going to be elected. I guess it's only okay to scoff at and question candidates when it's a safe bet they're going to lose.

I'm a little shocked that Akin is pulling the old "I was taken out of context" approach to this. He hardly ever backs down from his bullshit statements.

As a student and lover of history this makes me want to bang my head repeatedly against the wall. Like, shit. Just. I mean. This has never been a good idea like it's been a really bad one that has always been used to systemically disenfranchise huge swaths of people like dude that's what your friendly neighbourhood KKK chapter did for shits and giggles on a Friday night and I can't even with this how can you suggest something like this and still be considered a politically viable candidate for any kind of public office what the fuck.

Like, America, this is fucked up even for the Republicans and the special brand bullshit they've been shovelling out ever since the black dude got into office all the black hive mind voted him in.

Hmmm. I disagree. I think certain states have proven they can't be trusted with this responsibility with such things as Jim Crow laws and poll taxes specifically meant to disenfranchise minority voters.

Update: Akin issues a statement to Fox 2: “Congressman Todd Akin believes that the right to vote is fundamental to our country. He supports laws that protect these rights and did not say that he was opposed to the ‘civil rights and voting rights’ laws. Akin has, and always will, support the right to vote.”

Ooooh, he's attempting to backpedal now. Damn, I did not realize that there were so many time travelers in the GOP.

It's too late though. This, and his past statements about discontinuing school lunches already provide enough vital clues about him to show him to be a horrible, pathetic excuse for a human being.
