I was just coming back to edit the post because the "1 in 12" has been debunked.

It's very clunky wording, but I believe what the article meant is that "1 in 12 transgender people in U.S. will become murder victims" which is actually not true.

Nonetheless, this is a tragic case. I don't see racism, though and race hasn't been mentioned as a motive, yet.
